Telling the time

Look out for the following pieces of vocabulary in this clip.

leth-uair an dèidh … half past…

leth-uair an dèidh sia half past six

cairteal gu ceithir quarter to four

cairteal an dèidh quarter past

tha e aon uair deug it is eleven o’ clock

tha e dà uair dheug it is twelve o’clock

We have already seen that the word can affect the beginning of the following word, such as dà chofaidh, dà fhichead. A vowel is not followed by an h, so two o’ clock is just dà uair, but the phrase for twelve o’ clock is. It is affected as the beginning of deug is affected as dà uair dheug.
